Take Control of Your Stress

Psychological stress is the most common form of stress. When it occurs in response to a single traumatic event, such as the loss of a loved one, it is referred to as acute stress. When a difficult situation persists over time, such as prolonged overwork, it is known as chronic stress.

Finally, it is important to distinguish between stress, which is an immediate response to a situation, and anxiety, which arises from anticipating a negative event.

Enfin, nous distinguons le stress, qui se manifeste immédiatement, de l’anxiété qui survient à cause de l’anticipation d’un événement négatif.

How Does the Body Respond to and Manage Stress?

The body's physiological response to stress involves the release of several signaling molecules. For example, serotonin is a neurotransmitter produced in the brain. Its signal is transmitted to target cells with the help of calcium, while magnesium is released from these cells during the process.

The ACTH hormone, which is also produced by the brain during periods of stress, stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol. Like adrenaline, cortisol helps provide energy to the brain while regulating heart and respiratory function. Vitamin C, in turn, helps restore normal cortisol levels in the bloodstream.

In addition to magnesium and vitamin C, certain B vitamins contribute to normal psychological function[2].

Managing Stress Through Nutrition and Physical Activity

Vitamin C cannot be synthesized by the body and must therefore be obtained through the diet. It is naturally found in citrus fruits, as well as kiwis and bell peppers. Rhodiola, taken as a dietary supplement, may help support emotional balance and promote relaxation.

Practicing regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to manage stress. This can begin with relaxing activities such as yoga or sophrology, which help release tension and improve focus through deep abdominal breathing. Depending on your preferences, physical fitness, and age, you may also choose more vigorous exercise, as the release of endorphins promotes a greater sense of well-being.

Finally, here are a few tips to help organize your daily life and reduce stress as much as possible:

  • take regular breaks in a quiet environment and unwind by enjoying your favorite activities,
  • distinguish between what is truly important and the minor hassles of everyday life,
  • organize your tasks and identify your priorities to avoid becoming overwhelmed.
